Ukraine seeks to resume EU gas imports from Russia

(MENAFN) Company CEO Yuriy Vitrenko says Ukrainian energy giant Naftogaz wants to increase natural gas production and switch to domestic alternative energy to produce enough fuel to serve the EU during the next year’s heating season.

According to Vitrenko, if Ukraine can obtain capital and technology from Western partners, it will be able to generate enough gas to replace Russian supply.

He noted that his company is considering shale drilling and horizontal drilling methods in order to increase production, saying: “We are working on new projects that can really significantly increase production in Ukraine – by 10-30% “.

Vitrenko says Naftogaz is also exploring options for converting biomass in gas-fired power plants. The CEO claims that Ukraine has the capacity to “produce about ten billion cubic meters of energy from biomass”, which according to Reuters statistics is equivalent to the amount of gas purchased by Ukraine before the start of Russian military action in February. .
