LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) – The goal is to meet a need in the community while providing high quality education to their students.
“It’s sort of a win-win, the students get a great learning experience and our community members get a really unique, high quality mental health service,” James said.
Clinic director Paul James said the psychology clinic opened in 2016.
Each year it begins in August and continues until the end of the school year in May.
He hopes more people will seek help because it can really make a difference in a person’s life.
“We just want people to know that it’s okay to ask for help, that help can make a big difference, and that research supports that counseling can really transform people’s lives,” he said. he declares.
The clinic is run by Cameron University graduates pursuing a master’s degree in psychology.
Students work under the direct supervision of a licensed therapist.
Caley Filipek is striving to get her master’s degree in behavioral science, and she said you can’t learn a lot from a textbook.
“It’s really when you have the opportunity to practice what you’ve learned and see how it plays out in real life,” Filipek said.
Filpek said she is looking forward to gaining this hands-on experience which will be invaluable for her career. Her mother graduated from Cameron University with a master’s degree in psychology, and she said that experience helped her understand the impact of her mother, doing it herself.
“I want to be that person I had whenever I needed it, I know my mom was there when people needed her, I want to be that person for someone.” she says.
This clinic is located on the east side of the Cameron campus at 258 SW 27th st.
Clients have the option to meet in person or virtually via zoom. If you would like more information, you can contact the clinic by dialing (580) 580-3153.
