Members of the Shiite Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) took to the streets on Saturday in Abuja to demand the unconditional release of the international passports of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, Malam Zeenatuddin Ibrahim.

Recall that El-Zakzaky, his wife, had been in detention for about seven (7) years, following the clash between the Nigerian army and the Shiites in Zaria, Kaduna State in December 2015, which led to the murder of several members of the IMN

The protesting Shiites included children, men and women, who marched from the central area through Wuse market and ended in Jabi.

Islamic Movement Academic Forum Secretary Abdullahi Muhammad, who spoke to The Guardian during the protests, called on the government to unconditionally release the international passports of our leader Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife Zeenah.

Muhammad said: “The essence of mourning this great historical figure is to preserve his valiant exemplary resistance and to be inspired by his honorable struggle. Islam owes its existence and continuation to the struggle of Imam Husain ( as) If the Imam had submitted to the tyrant, Islam would have been dead and buried long ago.

“The token hunt started on Thursday in the Northern States, today’s was the Constitution which is still taking place in Abuja. this is the first time since 2015 that we have started and ended peacefully without harassment from the security forces, which shows everyone that they are behind all the violence against our programs.

“It is also the root of the struggle of our revered leader, Shaikh Ibraheem Zakzaky against the tyrannical system of our society. One can understand why we will never give in to injustice, tyranny, oppression and oppressors !! We will continue to resist until the last drops of our blood. We wish to express our condolences to the Imam of our time,” he said.

They also displayed placards and portraits of Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, while chanting anti-government songs. The placards bore inscriptions such as: “We want justice” and “Free El-Zakzaky’s international passports”, among others.

According to Muhammad, “We in the world today have an urgent and ardent need to emulate this exemplary stand against tyrants and tyranny in this world which is filled with oppression and oppressors. It is our only path to a happy and happy life in this mundane world and life after death.

“We must emulate the selflessness shown by Imam Husain in the Karbala desert. This is true regardless of your religious beliefs, as one of Imam Husain’s favorite sayings while addressing those inhuman soldiers of the tyrant Yazid on this fateful day”.

Also speaking at the protests, Dr Dauda Nalado said, “It should also be mentioned that this steadfastness, sacrifice and rebellion against tyranny and oppression displayed by the Imam is the source of all the revolutionary uprisings in the history of Islam,” he said. .
