Brighton striker Leandro Trossard produced a scintillating performance at Anfield as his side earned a 3-3 draw with Liverpool.
The Belgium international was able to activate the style on Roberto de Zerbi’s Premier League debut. The Italian manager replaced Graham Potter during the international break and started his tenure with a memorable draw.
The former Shakhtar Donetsk boss saw his side lead 2-0 as Trossard netted a 17-minute brace. However, Brighton’s advantage was quickly extinguished when Roberto Firmino created a brace of his own.
To make matters worse, Adam Webster’s own goal put the hosts 3-2 ahead. Despite this, Brighton never gave up hope and secured the draw with Trossard completing their hat-trick in the 83rd minute.
Speaking after the match, De Zerbi said BBC Sports: “A crazy match.
“I am happy and proud for my players and my club. There was a possibility of winning the game but Liverpool are a fantastic team. I knew before the match that it could be difficult and it was very difficult.
“Of course the point for us is really important because liverpool In the end it’s Liverpool but we had plenty of chances to score and if we had won the game I wouldn’t have felt like I stole anything here.
“At that time, I didn’t think we had to win the game. That’s 90 minutes plus extra time at Anfield.
De Zerbi then claimed to have texted Trossard during the international break, asking the keen striker to increase his goalscoring tally.
Trossard clearly took notice and responded with a hat-trick to the first request.
De Zerbi added: “When [Trossard] was in the national team, I messaged him and told him he needs to increase his goal tally and I think he made me happy!
Brighton could have scored even more – Trossard
Brighton’s heroics at Anfield maintained their strong start to the Premier League season. The Seagulls finished the day in the top four, having amassed 14 points in their first seven games.
Treble star Trossard was pleased with his side’s performance and hailed his “passionate” new coach. He also claimed even more goals than the three they scored could have slipped past the suspicious Liverpool defence.
The Belgium international said BBC Sports“Obviously it’s always good if you can score but especially three at Anfield.
“We’re disappointed not to get a clean sheet, but it’s good to get a point here. It’s always hard.
“We could have scored more of course, especially if you are 2-0 up, but in the end I think we should settle for one point. It was a great performance from us.
“I love every game, but obviously it’s a big game, so you want to show yourself in the best way possible. Hopefully I can keep filling that form.
“[Roberto De Zerbi] tried to work a lot already this week on the technical stuff. You could see how passionate he is and I think we will have a great time with him.
Brighton will now turn their attention to Tottenham, who suffered a 3-1 defeat in the North London derby on Saturday.
