Some Chelsea supporters are asking Ross Barkley to start against Brentford after the international break is over.

The Blues managed to avoid a slight scare against Southampton to win 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, Barkley impressing in his brief appearance on the pitch.

The hosts took the lead with an early Trevoh Chalobah header, but the Saints were tied in the second half when James Ward-Prowse converted from the penalty spot.

However, Southampton captain Ward-Prowse was subsequently given a red card after a challenge on Jorginho meaning Chelsea had a male advantage for the remainder of the game.

Timo Werner converted at close range to give the Blues a 2-1 lead in west London before Ben Chilwell finished the scoring in the latter stages of the Premier League clash – to hand Chelsea back to the top of the ranking.

For the home side’s second goal, Barkley played a fantastic assist to Cesar Azpilicueta, before the Blues defender found Werner in the middle, who made it 2-1.

Barkley was only on the pitch for around 10 minutes, with the former Everton star making his first Premier League appearance of the season, but did enough to impress some Chelsea fans in the brief appearance.

Many fans were left rather confused when Thomas Tuchel opted for Barkley on the bench over Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech, but the Chelsea boss explained his decision after the game.

When asked if Havertz and Ziyech’s form was a concern, Tuchel said: “We always try to do our best to keep the players in the best shape but at some point after a lot of chances , we have to admit that Kai and Hakim are not in their best shape.

“It might not even be their fault, it’s like that right now. They’re struggling right now to be decisive. But we had a period after the preseason where Kai and Hakim have was very decisive for us.

“Hakim has been a key player throughout our preparation and in his first Super Cup game against Villarreal. Kai also provided the assist for Hakim’s goal.

“They might have lost some faith, some trust, whatever. We won’t stop trying to boost them. No one is mad at them and no one has great concerns, but we have to. pay attention to the actual shape.

“We have to win games and today was a day we needed a mix of players accustomed to our style with quick decisions because we knew the pressing from Southampton.

“And on the other hand, we wanted other players who maybe don’t feel so much pressure and who maybe don’t have the same high expectations of themselves and also of us, the expectations are also very high for Kai, Timo, Hakim.

“It’s not because we want to overwhelm them, but because we know what they can offer and we want to have it. At a club like Chelsea you have to be sharp every three days and fight for your up. That’s what’s happening. “
