ISLAMABAD: Cell phone production by local manufacturing factories nearly doubled compared to the import of commercial cell phones into the country between January and October 2021, with local production recorded at 18.87 million compared to phones laptops imported 9.45 million.

Data from the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) revealed that this trend reflects a positive adoption of the PTA’s mobile device manufacturing authorization (MDM) regulatory regime, under which local manufacturing during the The scheme’s first year resulted in the production of 18.87 million phones in a short span of 10 months, including 7.93 million 4G smartphones.

According to PTA data, 52% of mobile devices are smartphones and 48% 2G on the Pakistani network.

The successful implementation of the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) as well as supportive government policies, including the mobile manufacturing policy, have created an enabling environment for the manufacturing of mobile devices in Canada. Pakistan.

The PTA, in light of the policy, released the Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) Regulations on January 28, 2021.

So far, 26 companies have received MDM authorization to manufacture mobile devices in Pakistan.

The companies included famous brands like Samsung, Nokia, Oppo, TECNO, Infinix, Vgotel, Q-mobile, etc.

The establishment of 26 manufacturing plants generated an investment of more than $ 126 million and created more than 10,000 jobs in the space of 10 months.

According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the country’s overall telecommunications imports between July and October 2021 increased by 22.40%, from $ 691.644 million in July-October 2020 to $ 846.553 million in July-October 2021.

On a month-to-month basis, Pakistan’s cellphone imports fell 28.37 percent in October 2021 and remained at $ 149.713 million from the $ 209.013 million imported in September 2021, data revealed. from PBS.

Year over year, cellphones saw a 130.08% increase from $ 65,069 million in October 2020.

On a monthly basis, the country’s overall telecommunications imports declined 22.95% in October 2021 and remained at $ 208.678 million, compared to imports of $ 270.823 million in September 2021. On an annual basis, Global telecommunications imports grew 105.82% from $ 101.390 million in October 2020.
