Emotional intelligence (EQ) can profoundly improve our personal and professional lives, helping us do everything from navigating complex social situations to managing relationships with people other than us.

Taught by Gemma Leigh Roberts, registered psychologist and founder of the Resilience Edge framework, the course has become one of the five most popular courses on Linkedin Learning now until 2020.
Throughout the course, Roberts explores the four factors behind EQ – self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship building – to provide learners with science-based strategies for understanding their emotions and for showing empathy when ‘they communicate with others.
As someone interested in learning more about psychology and science-based mental wellness strategies, this course really caught my attention as it focuses not only on individual wellness, but also on the optimization of your daily performance at work (whether you work on a team or as a solo freelance).

What to expect from the course
Developing Your Emotional Intelligence covers the following topics within an estimated five weeks:

Each section includes video lectures and a chapter quiz to test your understanding of the content. It takes around five weeks to officially complete the course, but since it adapts to your pace, you can technically complete it in a week or even a few longer sessions.
3 things I liked about developing your emotional intelligence
1. Roberts uses real and relevant situations to explain different psychological tools.
As I watched Roberts’ lectures, I found myself in touch with a lot of situations. She analyzes common issues in our personal and professional lives, highlighting how they could have been avoided by understanding our emotions and being empathetic when expressing them to others. Many quizzes also focus on applying psychological concepts to realistic scenarios, which is extremely helpful in remembering how to use EQ in real life.
One example is how two coworkers engage in a conversation that ends up being a heated argument. Roberts says that if you want to change the way you react emotionally, start by accepting your past behavior and use that to define how you want to behave and react in the future. She identifies it as a learning curve that requires conscious practice, but once you have it, you will be able to control your emotional reactions even at a controversial time.
2. You learn real tips for practicing empathy on a daily basis.
Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes seems a lot easier than it actually is, but it’s so crucial: the course emphasizes that the ability to empathize with others is a A key predictor of emotional intelligence and, therefore, strong relationships with others.
Like any other skill, cultivating empathy takes practice. Roberts breaks it down into two steps. One, she says, is asking the other person questions to find out how they are handling the situation or the impact it is having on them. If you don’t have the opportunity to ask questions, you can also take a step back and imagine the possibilities of how they can think and feel.
The other step is to offer support and understanding, without assuming that you have the answers the other person needs. You may not be able to resolve or change the situation for them, but it is important for the person to know that you are actively listening and trying to understand them.
3. The course teaches you how to collect and manage honest feedback to build stronger relationships.
Roberts explained how we often wonder about how others see and think of us, which resonated with me; when I work in a team, I always wonder if others understand my approach and my intentions. Roberts says the key to understanding how others view you is asking their opinion.
Feedback can go one of two ways: the fear of receiving negative responses can influence your emotional reactions and your self-esteem – or, you can appreciate and use the feedback to grow taller. If you want to get feedback, Roberts promotes a review-refine-rehearse process, in which you examine how you are viewed, fine-tune and make changes to make sure you experience an empathetic attitude and repeat the process over and over again. .
I recently took Roberts’ advice and asked a few of my colleagues for feedback on a draft group for work. The main feedback I received was that sometimes I prolong the conversations so much that I don’t get to the point quickly. While this can be okay for casual jokes, it can really set the team behind when it comes to important business decisions. I am now training to be more concise and punchy in my communication so that I can make it a habit. I found that doing this not only impacted my EQ, but helped me build relationships better and communicate effectively.
The bottom line
Although I didn’t know much about EQ before this class, I was amazed at how much I learned over the past few weeks. This course not only teaches you how to develop your EQ, it also shows you how to strengthen your bonds and feel more satisfied with your everyday life. By the end of the course, you will be able to identify what EQ is and how to achieve it through research-backed psychological counseling, such as managing your state of mind and empathy. Personally, it has helped me strengthen my relationships and ask for feedback to grow.
