Aston Villa are reportedly keen to make Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse their next signing following Emi Buendia’s disembarkation.
Villa very quickly announced their intention to support Dean Smith this summer and to support their “quality over quantity” approach.
More than £ 30million has been pledged for the imminent signing of Buendia from Norwich City, who has reportedly undergone a medical examination in his native Argentina where he is preparing for the Copa America.
Now the Guardian reports that England international Ward-Prowse is the next man on Smith’s wishlist. It is not known how much the Saints appreciate it, at this time.
Villa fired Ross Barkley at Chelsea after his loan expired at the end of the season and they want to increase Smith’s options in the middle of the park.
Smith relied on John McGinn, Douglas Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba as obvious options, while there’s also the exciting emergence of Jacob Ramsey that Villa supporters witnessed last season and the arrival in January of Morgan Sanson.
Ward-Prowse, 26, has been with Southampton his entire career and has continued to wear the armband and present himself as one of the Saints’ best players season after season under Ralph Hasenhuttl.
He plays for England against Romania on Sunday alongside Villa players Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings.

“My God if we get Ward-Prowse,” wrote another.
A third beamed: “If the rumors are true about James Ward-Prowse, we go to some places. The most fouled player in the Premier League, arguably fielding them for the best free kick taker in the league. Let’s go! “
Another enthusiastic supporter said: “If Villa signs James Ward-Prowse, I think I’m going to really fall apart. The dirtiest player in world football and the best free kick taker in world football in the same 11? The dream.”
“I wasn’t expecting it, but Ward-Prowse would be a great addition, with Buendia catching, the kids coming in… I can’t wait to start over. Top 7 a conservative expectation, ”added a fifth.
