For fiscal year 2020-21, imports of active pharmaceutical ingredients amounted to Rs 28,529 crore while exports stood at Rs 32,856 crore, Parliament informed on Tuesday.
The market size of APIs and intermediates in India is estimated at Rs 96,000 crore in fiscal year 2019-2020, Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said in response to a question in Lok Sabha .
According to the data kept by the General Directorate of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS), the quantity of API imports was 3 90,476 MT and exports of 3,24,331 MT for the fiscal year 2020-21, a- he added.
The value of imports for the current year was Rs 28,529 crore, while exports amounted to Rs 32,856 crore, the minister said.
The Department of Pharmaceuticals is implementing three programs to promote domestic manufacture of APIs to ensure their sustainable domestic supply and make India Atma Nirbhar, he added.
The programs are: a Production Linked Incentive Program (PLI) for the promotion of domestic manufacture of essential raw materials / drug intermediates and active pharmaceutical ingredients in India, a bulk drug fleets promotion program and a production-linked incentive program for pharmaceuticals, Mandaviya said.
